Music, dance and drama have an exceptional stage in town! Coburg’s theatre tradition goes back a long way – as far back as 1683 travelling troupes performed here, in a theatre room set aside specifically for that purpose in the armoury. In 1840 Duke Ernst I opened the theatre on palace square, built in the classicist style. As a tri-purpose building it provides a wonderful stage for a diverse programme, amongst others with the young state theatre.
THEATRES
GLOBE COBURG
Venue of the state theatre
Coburg’s state theatre will undergo extensive refurbishment for several years. For this period, the new GLOBE COBURG at Nina Bellosa square serves as an interim venue. Its rotunda-like shape is based on the London Globe Theatre, famous for its performances of Shakespeare’s works, and accommodates up to 500 theatregoers.
STATE THEATRE
Place of fine arts
The magnificent state theatre, directly facing Ehrenburg Palace, is amongst Bavaria's finest theatre buildings. As a tri-purpose building it provides a wonderful stage for plays, operas, concerts, and ballet. Beginning in 2023, the state theatre will undergo extensive refurbishment for several years. For this period, the new GLOBE COBURG will serve as an interim venue.
RIDING HALL
Studio stage with charm
The ‘Theater in der Reithalle’ (former riding hall), situated along the south edge of palace square, houses 99 spectators and will continue to be used during the refurbishment of the state theatre. The studio stage is housed in a sandstone building designed in the neo-Gothic style, which formerly served as the ducal riding hall. It captivates with its atmosphere and entertaining shows. There is virtually no separation between the audience and stage, allowing easy interaction between both and providing scope for various open forms of theatre.
