Noblesse oblige

You would be hard pressed to find a single district or village in the former duchy which does not - or did not at one time - hold a castle, fortress, manor house or feudal estate. You will find anything from magnificent castles or fortresses with towers and battlements reminiscent of fairytales, to unassuming manor houses and feudal estates that are now barely recognisable as castles. Whatever their condition, all have retained their original charm. Anyone keen to feel like a princess or a prince should be sure to visit the following castles in Coburg.

Rosenau Palace

Rosenau Palace was one of Queen Victoria’s favourite places. Maybe it was because this is where her beloved husband Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was born. The property is located just outside of Coburg in a romantic English landscape garden. The building has magnificent rooms with original furnishings and can be visited by the public. Particularly impressive is the marble hall (Marmorsaal), which served as the ballroom in earlier times. The European Museum of Modern Glass is housed nearby.
