200 Years of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha

People and History

To mark the 200th anniversary of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 2026, this special themed tour invites visitors on a journey through time in the old town of Coburg. At authentic historical sites, the origins of the dual duchy, which was created in 1826 through a division of inheritance, are brought vividly to life. The tour focuses on Duke Ernst I, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (formerly of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld), his consort Princess Louise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, and their sons Albert and Ernst. On 31 July 1817, Ernst I married Princess Louise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. Through her lineage, Louise forged a dynastic link between the houses of Coburg and Gotha. After the death of Frederick IV, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, the territories were reorganised. Under the rule of Ernst I, the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was founded in 1826. His remodelling of the residences in the Neo-Gothic style left a lasting mark on the townscape. The tour explores the key political events of 1826 as well as the international significance of the ducal house, reflected in the marriage of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Queen Victoria of Great Britain and Ireland. On the market square, at the Prince Albert Memorial, visitors learn more about the lives and achievements of the sons, Ernst II and Albert.
