Coburg Fortress (Veste Coburg)

The dukes of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha began establishing internationally significant art collections at the Veste Coburg (‘Veste’ means fortress) in the 19th century. Today, these historical premises are open to the public as a museum. Explore the extensive Graphic Arts Collection (Kupferstichkabinett), admire sumptuous Venetian glasswork, and marvel at historic hunting weapons. Don’t miss the impressive display of carriages, coaches, and jousting armaments, along with masterpieces by German Renaissance artists. European Museum of Modern Glass

Rödental near Coburg

The light-filled European Museum of Modern Glass, set in the picturesque park of Rosenau Castle, presents modern glass art from the beginnings of the studio movement in the 1960s to today. Covering more than 1,260m², the museum displays a wide range of glass art, from creatively designed glassware to sculptures and large-scale installations in vibrant colours. A glass staircase leads from the permanent exhibition on the ground floor to the special exhibition rooms and the lamp glass studio. The ceramic study collection in the basement, with 500 international pieces, is considered the largest of its kind in southern Germany. The museum is particularly impressive at dusk, when the glass façade begins to glow.
