Castle square (Schlossplatz)

Short facts

  • Coburg
  • Sights

The view from the arcades over Coburg’s castle square is impressive at any time of day or night.

The state theatre (Landestheater) and Edinburgh Palace rise imposingly on one side, while Ehrenburg Palace towers over the other with its magnificent neo-Gothic sandstone facade. From 1825 onwards, Duke Ernst I had the castle square created in its present form as a representative square in the historical-classicist style during an extensive reconstruction phase. The characteristic arcades from the Italian late Renaissance serve as a kind of fortification at the foot of the court garden (Hofgarten). They invite visitors to stroll and relax. Nowadays, numerous concerts and festivals are held on the Schlossplatz during the summer months.
