200 Years of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha

Anniversary of the Dual Duchy

In 2026, Coburg celebrates an exceptional anniversary: 200 years ago, the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was established under Duke Ernest I. A highlight of the anniversary year is a major exhibition at the Veste Coburg Art Collections, taking place from 22 May to 20 September 2026. At its centre stands Duke Ernest I, a visionary and complex ruler who left a lasting mark on Coburg and Gotha as a statesman, patron of architecture and passionate collector. A specially guided tour through Coburg’s old town offers visitors the opportunity to journey back in time to the era of the dual duchy. At authentic historical locations, visitors gain insights into the political events of 1826, life at the ducal court, and the traces this period has left on the townscape to this day.
