Church of St. Maurice (Morizkirche)

Short facts

  • Coburg
  • Churches, Sights
Located in the heart of the medieval town centre, St. Maurice Church with its unequal towers stands out above the rooftops of the houses surrounding the churchyard. For centuries, it served as the centre of the Protestant state church and the burial site for Saxon dukes. The construction history of the current church dates back to the 14th century. During Easter week in 1530, the reformer Martin Luther preached here multiple times. One of the remarkable features of the church is the 13-meter-high alabaster epitaph in the choir, which was commissioned by Duke Johann Casimir in 1598 to honor his parents. It is considered one of the most beautiful Renaissance epitaphs in Germany. In the mid-18th century, the late Gothic hall-like structure was baroqueized. In 2016, the chancel was redesigned.
