The Church of the Holy Cross

Short facts

  • Coburg
  • Churches, Sights

The Church of the Holy Cross, built in 1401, is one of Coburg's architectural treasures.

Originally constructed just outside the town gates, this late Gothic church has undergone significant transformations over the centuries. In the 18th century, the interior was remodelled into a hall church in the distinctive margrave style, blending Renaissance and Baroque influences. This transformation introduced architectural asymmetry both inside and outside, giving the church its unique and intriguing character. Highlights include the oldest part of the church, the chancel, which reflects the original Gothic design and marks the core of a chapel built near a ford along a key military and trade route in the early 15th century. A notable feature of the church is the Renaissance baptismal font from 1691. The Virgin Mary Altar (Marienaltar), crafted in 1515 by the school of Tilman Riemenschneider, once adorned the church and is now preserved in the Art Collections of the Veste Coburg.
