Court Pharmacy (Hof-Apotheke)

Short facts

  • Coburg
  • Sights

Located on the east side of Coburg's market square at the corner of Steingasse, the Court Pharmacy (Hof-Apotheke) is one of the town's oldest and most iconic buildings.

For several centuries, the distinctive building has been used as a pharmacy. This Gothic structure is adorned with two striking Renaissance-era stone figures: the Madonna with child and St. Christopher, attributed to the Riemenschneider School. Visitors can still admire the original ribbed vaults inside the shop. The pharmacy’s herb attic, a historical feature, houses aged beechwood barrels where valuable herbs have been stored for centuries. The Court Pharmacy is also famous for its traditional liqueur (Hof-Likoer), a spiced herbal liqueur prepared using a traditional recipe passed down through generations. A visit to the Court Pharmacy offers not only a glimpse into Coburg's architectural and medicinal history but also the chance to taste a cherished local speciality.
