Coburg’s market square (Marktplatz) has been the heart of the town’s urban life for centuries. Originally laid out in the late 13th century and paved by the 16th century, it connects to the old town through seven charming alleys. In the centre of the square stands the monumental statue of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, installed in 1865 as a tribute to one of Coburg’s most famous sons. On the northern side, the late German Renaissance-style town house (Stadthaus) boasts intricate gables and the unique Coburg oriels (Coburger Erker), which are only found in this town. Directly opposite is the Renaissance town hall (Rathaus), completing the historic ensemble. The square comes alive every Wednesday and Saturday morning during the weekly market, where locals and visitors alike can shop for fresh regional produce, flowers, and handmade goods. In the evening, an ingenious lighting design transforms the square into a magical space, enhancing its architectural beauty. Whether you are exploring its history, admiring its architecture, or enjoying its vibrant market, Coburg’s market square is an unforgettable experience.
