Prince’s Palais: Residence full of history

The four-story building in Coburg’s Steingasse, affectionately known as the Prince’s Palais, has a rich history that dates back to the 16th century. In the 18th century, it served as the residence of Hereditary Prince Francis Frederick Anthony of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld and his family. His sons Ernst (later Duke Ernst I) and Leopold (the first King of Belgium) grew up here. During renovations of the rear section of the building, remnants of a 13th century provostship were uncovered. These early traces of Coburg’s history are preserved and can be viewed in the Excavation Museum located in the cellar of the administrative building. Today, the Prince’s Palais serves as the centre for the town’s administrative authorities.
