Palais Edinburgh stands as an impressive landmark on Coburg’s Palace Square (Schlossplatz), complementing the historic ensemble near the Coburg State Theatre. Built from 1845 to 1846 at the behest of Karl August Freiherr von Wangenheim, the palace later became the residence of Prince Alfred of Edinburgh, the second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. After acquiring the building in 1865, Prince Alfred had it remodeled in the Neo-Renaissance style and used it as his primary residence. A famous photograph from 1894 during the Coburg Royal Wedding showcases its historical significance, with notable figures such as Kaiser Wilhelm II, Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, and Queen Victoria herself gathering at the Palais. In 1939, a group of entrepreneurs acquired the building. Since 1952, it has served as the headquarters of Coburg’s Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK). Although Palais Edinburgh is not open to the public, its royal heritage and elegant architecture make it a fascinating part of Coburg’s cultural history.
