To the right, the state theatre and Palais Edinburgh stand proudly, while to the left, Ehrenburg Palace dominates the scene with its magnificent Neo-Gothic sandstone façade. Duke Ernst I commissioned the creation of the square in its current form from 1825 onwards, during a lengthy reconstruction phase. The arcades in the late Italian Renaissance style serve as a kind of boundary at the foot of the Hofgarten park and invite visitors to stroll and relax. During the summer months, numerous concerts and festivals take place on the square.
