State Library Coburg: Historical treasures in Ehrenburg Palace

The State Library Coburg is housed in Ehrenburg Palace and dates back to the mid-16th century. Its prestigious inventory includes approximately 500,000 books, safeguarded behind closed doors. Among its treasures are over 30 historical collections from the 16th to 20th centuries, largely stemming from the Ernestine Wettin dynasty, the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (from 1735), and Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (from 1826). The library boasts around 50,000 titles from the Reformation and the Thirty Years’ War period, including illustrated Luther Bibles from the early 16th century. Visitors can explore the library’s freely accessible public rooms on the first floor of Ehrenburg Palace, one of Germany’s most beautiful library spaces. Temporary exhibitions offer insights into the rich and diverse historical collections. For academic research, the cultural treasures of the reading room can be viewed upon request.
