State Archive Coburg: Historical documentation in the former armoury

The State Archive Coburg is the official authority responsible for all archival matters in Coburg town and district. In 1990, the archive moved into the distinctive building of the former armoury in Herrngasse, which was constructed between 1616 and 1621 in the Renaissance style under Duke Johann Casimir of Saxe-Coburg. The duke commissioned painter and court architect Peter Sengelaub (around 1558–1622) for its construction. The building’s original purpose as an armoury was lost during the Thirty Years’ War, after which it served various functions, including administration, judiciary, culture (theatre), and economy. The State Archive Coburg currently holds around 420,000 archival items, including approximately 14,830 certificates, 11,800 maps and plans, and 15,600 photos and pictures.
