The Churchyard Excavation Museum (Grabungsmuseum Kirchhof)

Short facts

  • Museums, Sights

The Churchyard Excavation Museum (Grabungsmuseum Kirchhof), opened in 1994, offers a fascinating glimpse into Coburg's medieval history.

Discovered during the construction of Coburg’s administration building, the site revealed the cemetery of St. Moriz and the foundation walls of the 13th-century Benedictine provost chapel of Saalfeld. These remains, along with artefacts found during the excavations, are now showcased in this small but richly detailed archaeological museum. Visitors can explore the building’s history and excavation documentation of the eastern churchyard, view reconstruction drawings, and marvel at the artefacts on display. Highlights include the foundation walls of the chapel, which was demolished in 1827, high medieval graves, sections of Coburg’s medieval town fortifications, and a diverse collection of medieval and early modern ceramics, household items, jewelry, and coins. Whether you are an archaeology enthusiast or simply curious about Coburg’s rich history, the Churchyard Excavations Museum provides a unique opportunity to step back in time.
A visit to the excavation museum can also be included in a guided tour of Coburg's old town. Please ask when booking your guided tour for groups. Our tour guides will take you on a short journey back in time to the Middle Ages.
