Explore natural history at Coburg’s Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum Coburg, the largest museum of its kind in northern Bavaria, is located near the Hofgarten park. The museum’s history dates back to the collections of the Coburg dukes, who opened their treasures to the public in 1844. Franz Friedrich Anton of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (1750–1806) laid the foundation for this extraordinary collection. His grandsons, Duke Ernst II and Prince Albert, further expanded it with a passion for gathering natural objects like stuffed birds and rare stones. In 1914, the collection moved to its current location. Today, the museum spans 2,400 m² of exhibition space, featuring fascinating displays on the geological history of Upper Franconia and the flora and fauna of the Coburg region. Visitors can marvel at approximately 700,000 collection pieces, including fossils, crystals, a genuine marble mill, and an engaging volcano show. Regularly changing special exhibitions add to the museum’s allure, making it a captivating destination for all ages.
