St. Augustin Parish Church: A place of worship and history
Located near Coburg’s Hofgarten park, St. Augustin Parish Church was constructed in the Neo-Gothic style between 1856 and 1860 by Vinzenz Fischer-Birnbaum. Consecrated in 1860, it became the first Catholic parish church in Coburg after the Reformation. Between 2014 and 2016, the church underwent major restoration and expansion, including the addition of a modern cube-shaped annex on the forecourt, providing an intimate liturgical space for up to 30 people. Beneath the church lies the Koháry crypt, the burial site of several members of the Catholic branch of the Coburg ducal family.
The church is open daily, with guided tours available upon request. The Koháry crypt can be visited every Saturday from 2 pm to 3 pm, offering a glimpse into the rich history of Coburg’s ducal heritage.
