St. Salvator Church

Short facts

  • Coburg
  • Churches, Sights

The Evangelical-Lutheran cemetery church of St. Salvator, consecrated in 1662, is located in the heart of Coburg, near Albertinum Grammar School.

The surrounding Salvator cemetery was established in 1494 to replace the cemetery of the Church of St. Maurice (Morizkirche). Known as the Gottesacker Church, St. Salvator features historical tomb arcades on its northern side. In 1740, a sacristy annex was added to host religious services while the Morizkirche underwent renovations. The western entrance to the cemetery is marked by an ornate portal with a figure of Christ, inviting visitors to explore its peaceful grounds. During extensive renovations between 1961 and 1963, the interior of St. Salvator was significantly modernised. This included the addition of a new organ gallery, altar, and a half-height altar wall, blending historical charm with contemporary functionality. St. Salvator remains an enduring symbol of Coburg’s rich history. It serves as a tranquil place for reflection amidst the town’s vibrant centre.
