Gerber Fountain (Gerberbrunnen)

Short facts

  • Coburg
  • Sights

The Gerberbrunnen is located at the Mohrenstraße, on the square in front of the Gräfsblock.

The fountain was commissioned in memory of the tanners' guild and inaugurated in 1987. Tanners were first mentioned in documents in Coburg in 1474. As they needed water for their trade, they settled along the Hahn River and had their centre in the Lohgraben as well as in the Gerbergasse. The sculpture of the fountain was created by the sculptor Franz O. Lipp. The pedestal and the associated installations were made by the Kaltenbach company. The fountain sculpture shows working tanners. A verse by Hans Sachs about the tanners' craft decorates the water basin.
