Remains of Coburg's town fortifications can still be seen today. Originally, town gates were built along the roads leading out of the town as defensive measures, with each inner gate having a corresponding outer gate. Of the four original inner gates, only the Spitaltor and Judentor, both dating from the 13th century, remain. The sole surviving outer gate is the Ketschentor, which dates back to the 14th century. Today, these stone gates are no longer dominant features of the townscape.
