Spitaltor

Short facts

  • Coburg
  • Sights

The Spitaltor was constructed in the 13th century as the northern town gate of Coburg.

Originally built with stone foundations, it once featured a wooden structure with a steep gable roof and a Gothic turret, which was destroyed by fire in 1685. After the fire, the stone structure was raised higher and topped with an Italian roof. The six-story gate tower has an almost square base and a pointed archway. Some of the pedestrian passages were added in 1937 and 1955. Of the four original town gates in Coburg, only the Spitaltor and the Judentor remain. Together with the Ketschentor gate, they shape the streetscape.
