Hohenfels Palace (Schloss Hohenfels)

Short facts

  • Coburg
  • Castles & Palaces, Sights
Imposingly situated on Ernsthöhe hill, Hohenfels Palace offers a sweeping view of Coburg’s town centre. In 1837, Duke Ernst Alexander of Württemberg, nephew of Duke Ernst I, commissioned architect Balthasar Harres to construct a castle-like country residence on the hill. The building was completed in 1840 by Vincenz Fischer-Birnbaum in the style of classicism. Opera singer Natalie Eschborn, ennobled as Baroness von Grünhof, lived in the palace until 1890. In 1954, the private Medau School, a vocational school specialising in physiotherapy, gymnastics, speech therapy, and occupational therapy, moved into the palace. Due to the ongoing operation of the school, public tours of the interior are not possible. However, visitors can admire the building’s exterior during a walk.
