Fountain in front of the Fürstenbau

Short facts

  • Coburg
  • Sights
The supply of drinking water was one of the most important prerequisites for the fortification of a castle. The large well in the eastern courtyard of Veste Coburg, right in front of the entrance to the Fürstenbau, is probably the oldest on the site. In order to reach a water-bearing layer, it was once necessary to dig 50 metres deep into the ground to reach spring water. Today, the well shaft is only 28.5 metres deep because its walls have partially collapsed or been filled in over time. To bring the water to the surface, a treadwheel was used, which was operated by a well pedal. The well used to be protected by a well house in which it was located, which no longer exists today. It was not until 1893, with the construction of the municipal waterworks, that a water pipeline was built to the fortress courtyard and onto Veste Coburg.
