A gateway to Coburg's history and pedestrian zone

The outer Ketschen Gate (Ketschentor), built in 1303 during the reign of the Counts of Henneberg, stands as a testament to Coburg's medieval past. The coat of arms above the entrance proudly reflects its origins. Originally part of a double gate system, it served as the counterpart to the inner Ketschen Gate (Ketschentor). In 1713, the wooden upper structure, which featured turrets and oriels, was replaced with a baroque-style dome, known as Welsche Haube. Today, the outer Ketschen Gate (Ketschentor) is the only still existing outer town gate in Coburg. Passing through this historical archway, you step directly into Coburg’s vibrant pedestrian zone, inviting you to enjoy a leisurely shopping experience.
