Spengler's Fountain (Spenglersbrunnen)

Short facts

  • Coburg
  • Sights

No fewer than three fountains adorn Coburg's market place in the old town.

One of them is the Spengler's Fountain, located southeast on the corner of Ketschengasse. Its name goes back to the former Coburg citizen Spengler, in front of whose estate the fountain was built in 1550 - first as a wooden construction, then in 1621 it was made of stone. For a long time, the octagonal box fountain was the central water supply for many citizens in the city centre. A stone lion stands guard on a column in the centre, facing west and holding two coats of arms. On them are the city's coats of arms, a lion and the head of Saint Mauritius.
