Town house – impressive building at the market square

On the north side of Coburg’s market square, the old bailiwick and the former marketplace, which housed the butchers’ meat stalls, stood as a large building complex until the end of the 16th century. Upon the order of Duke Johann Casimir, these old buildings were demolished starting in 1597. The new construction housed the government chancellery, which also served as a marketplace for local merchants and craftsmen. Above a splendid portal on Spitalgasse, you can still see the older coat of arms of Johann Casimir, held by two lions. Today, the majestic town house in the style of late German Renaissance, with its figure-adorned gables and two Coburg jutties, is used by the town administration.
